Hal R. Keeling 69 a native of Hillsboro died Monday night at his home at 5519 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, after an extended illness. At the time of his death he was vice chairman of the board of Keeling Division Bozell and Jacobs Inc. He was the son of Austin and Mamie Starnes Keeling born August 23 1892, and reared in this vicinity. He started his colorful advertising career in 1915 as a copy writer for the Armstrong Cork Company, Pittsburg Pa. He returned to Indianapolis for a year and attended Butler University. He worked nights as a member of the editorial staff of the Indianapolis Star. In 1917 he was named advertising manager of the Old Haynes Automobile Company of Kokomo, and year later he joined the Sidney & VanRiper advertising agency of which he became a partner three years later. In 1937 Mr. Keeling founded the Keeling and Company agency and served as its first president until the firm was absorbed by Bozell and Jacobs in 1959 and he was named vice president. He was a member of the board of dirctors of the Penfect Circle Corporation for 15 years. In 1956 Mr. Keeling was cited by the Society of Distinguished Faculty members at Indiana University for outstanding work in his profession. He served as past president in several organizations and was very active in various clubs and franternities. Survivors include the widow Mrs. Ruth Harvey Keeling, one brother Rolland O. Keeling of Hillsboro a sister Mrs. Esther Fox of Vincennes, three nephews and one niece. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Flanner and Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary, with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery Indianapolis.
